More than 1000 native trees were planted at Whitechapel, near Arrowtown, on Saturday during the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust's first community planting day for the season.

Trust conservation co-ordinator Nita Smith said 35 volunteers planted a total of 1035 trees over the morning before a barbecue at the site on Saturday afternoon.

The first native trees were planted at Whitechapel four years ago and Ms Smith said the site was ``starting to look amazing with some impressive growth''.

She said planting would be carried out for the next four Saturdays and welcomed anyone who wanted to volunteer for a few hours.

This Saturday, the trust would be planting at the southern end of Lake Hayes, which has parking at the Lake Hayes Pavilion.

On April 21, the focus would be at Feehly Hill in Arrowtown, in conjunction with the Arrowtown Autumn Festival. Access was from Durham St.

On April 28, the trust would hold a maintenance day on the western side of Lake Hayes, with access from Rutherford Rd - volunteers for that day were asked to bring secateurs and gloves.

The final planting day would be held on May 5, returning to Whitechapel, Arrow River, with another barbecue lunch to end the season.
