Injured tramper rescued near Queenstown

An injured tramper has been rescued from back country near Queenstown.

The 60-year-old woman, from New Zealand, alerted emergency services from Steele Creek Lodge, in Greenstone Valley, after sustaining a foot injury.

Police say a helicopter was deployed to rescue the woman about 8am yesterday.

St John acting regional manager Dianne Payne said the woman was unable to walk due to a lower leg injury.

"I don't think it's broken but they won't know until she's had X-rays. She is being treated in [Queenstown's] Lakes District Hospital.''

The woman had been walking part of the Caples and Greenstone track.
