Queenstown Police intend to have a large presence on district roads over the next 10 days to cope with an influx of foreign drivers.
Thousands of tourists are expected in the lake resorts for the Chinese New Year.
Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown Police, said: "Our entire team will be involved, not just road policing but also our prevention and response teams.
"Whoever is available will be out on the roads, we hope [the public] will see us out there.''
Snr Sgt Enoka encouraged drivers to have patience during the busy period and plan extra time for their journey.
"That can help drivers not to get frustrated.''
But anyone witnessing poor or dangerous driving should call *555 or 111, she said.
