Arrowtown-based buyer’s agent Jo Eddington says her purchase of the township’s former Poplar Lodge was a ‘tap on the shoulder’ moment.

After showing the property, on a FaceTime video call, to overseas-based clients who went on to buy a nearby cottage instead, she had a sleepless night toying whether to buy it herself.

"It had such a cool ’70s charm I fell in love with it."

Eddington says what also appealed was its central location on the corner of Romans Ln and Merioneth St, beside a riverside reserve — "it’s one of the best stroll-everywhere spots in the village".

"It’s just this wee hidden gem."

She bought it then, after a nine-month settlement period, performed — thanks to great mates — a nine-day makeover before hosting her first guests last week.

"It was like watching a series of The Block, but on steroids".

Renamed Arrowtown Escape, the lodge and associated cottage are consented for up to 20 guests a night.

Noting Arrowtown only has three or four small motels, "I think what the village really needs is more people staying in town for the night, that’s what keeps our cafes, shops and restaurants buzzing".

Eddington says the property’s ideal for groups to book out, be they families, wedding parties, bikers or golfers.

At 1012 square metres, she adds, the site also has ample outdoor spaces, including BBQ facilities.
