Q’town athlete reaches podium

Queenstown teen Malik Boatwright narrowly missed out on a gold medal at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in South Korea on Saturday.

Competing in the junior male category, Malik, 18 (Continental Atherton), had earlier set the fastest time in the opening round of the world series (2min 50.863sec), before being edged out by Palmerston North’s Jonty Williamson, 17 (Yeti Fox Factory), by just 0.2 seconds in the final, staged at Mona YongPyong, a venue for the 2018 Winter Olympics — Frenchman Sacha Brizin came in third.

In the junior women’s event, fellow Queenstowner Indy Deavoll (Stoic Racing), finished seventh in the finals, in a time of 3min 27.698sec.
