Southland  came out on top when the fourth annual Fire and Emergency New Zealand sevens rugby tournament was held on Saturday.

The event was held at the Queenstown Recreation Ground.

Eight teams battled it out for first place, with Southland clinching the win and defending its title.

Organiser Ivan Millan said all teams played well.

``It was a very high quality of play throughout the day and most of the games were pretty close, and generally there were lots of tries scored.

``Southland were definitely the team of the tournament - they were on form throughout.''

The Otago team, made up solely of Dunedin players, came sixth.

Its coach, Simon Smith, described the annual event as ``quite competitive''.

``We are quite happy with that [sixth place]. There were a few injuries and it is quite a small team, so that was OK.

``They played as a team and never gave up even though they were getting beaten.''
