The curtain closed on the seventh Winter Games New Zealand event on Saturday as fans gathered for the last of the action.

After 17 days of competition on ice and snow, events at Cardrona Alpine Resort and the Queenstown Ice Arena were well supported by residents.

A festive crowd watched the ice hockey in Queenstown, as the Ice Blacks sealed consecutive series wins over their Australian counterparts.

Providing a lift for the players and fellow spectators was Queenstown's Bob Keith who was in full voice during the three internationals.

"When you watch ice hockey it's raw emotion and it flows on to the crowd and they get into it.

"It is the only time you can watch our national team play here in New Zealand."

Pleasant conditions again greeted competitors and onlookers at Cardrona on Saturday for the Freeski World Cup Halfpipe finals.

Wanaka's Carol Little, who has been a Cardrona ambassador for more than 20 years, said she had loved the Winter Games event.

"I love the place and competitions like this."

"The athletes are my big thing. I try and go around and make sure the athletes are happy."

The Scott family of Wanaka were also keen supporters of the halfpipe finals.

"I've just been watching it on the TV. I thought, we live right next door so we should come on up and have a look," Bruce Scott said.

"We've never seen anything like this."
