A vehicle belonging to a disabled driver in Kaitangata has been stolen and left burnt out at the Wangaloa domain.

The car, a white Holden VT Commodore, was taken from Poole St in Kaitangata on Tuesday night, after the keys were removed from the owner's address.

In a statement, police said the vehicle was distinctive as it had a left foot accelerator to enable the disabled owner to drive it.

Police believed the vehicle may have been driven around South Otago before it was taken through ''boggy paddocks'' where it became stuck.

The vehicle was found burnt out at the Wangaloa domain over the hill from Kaitangata.

Clutha-Taieri area response manager Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley, of Balclutha, said it was disturbing the car was stolen from a vulnerable person which left them without any independent mobility.

''It was bad enough to target a vulnerable person but [the] thieves went on to burn it out so it could not be returned to the owner.''

The theft would have a ''huge impact'' on the victim's life, Snr Sgt Fairley said.

The public were asked to call the police if they had seen anything suspicious.

Snr Sgt Fairley also asked if anyone in the South Otago area wanted to set up a Neighbourhood Support group.

Police were interested in hearing from anyone who might have seen the vehicle being driven around the Clutha district.

Balclutha police (03) 418-0203 or Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
