Community awards entries sought

Entries for the TrustPower Clutha District Community Awards close next Friday.

The awards are run in partnership with the Clutha District Council and are open to all voluntary groups and organisations working to improve the Clutha district.

Anyone can enter a voluntary group or organisation - voluntary groups and organisations can enter themselves.

Last year, a record 48 groups entered, and TrustPower community relations representative Jess Somerville said there were still many more voluntary groups in the district which deserved recognition.

''The value of volunteering is immense and irreplaceable.

''One of the best ways to demonstrate the importance of volunteering to the Clutha community is to ensure these volunteers' contributions are recognised, valued and accounted for,'' Miss Somerville said.

Last year's supreme winner was the Clutha Recreation Trust.

Entry forms for the awards are available from council offices and service centres or they can be completed online at www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards.

The awards cover five categories: heritage and environment, health and wellbeing, arts and culture, sport and leisure; and educational and child/youth development.

Category winners receive $500, runners-up $250 and the supreme winner will get $1500 and a trip to the 2013 TrustPower National Community Awards.

The Clutha awards are now in their 14th year, and will be presented at the Rosebank Lodge on September 16.
