Need to enrol for by-election

Balclutha residents are urged to check they are enrolled before a possible by-election in October.

Balclutha councillor Chris Hargest resigned from the Clutha District Council last Friday, because of work commitments.

Nominations for Mr Hargest's replacement close on August 16, and the first voting papers will go out on September 12. Any by-election will take place in October. If only one name is put forward, that person will be automatically elected and no by-election will be required or held.

The elected representative will join Balclutha ward representatives Crs Hamish Anderson, Ron Davis and Mary Johnstone.

Registrar of electors for the Clutha-Southland electorate Sue Skelt said the voters in the Balclutha ward area needed to enrol to vote or check that their enrolment details were correct.

"A by-election takes place in just five weeks' time. All eligible people will need to enrol or update their enrolment details by the 16th of August to vote in the by-election."

People enrolled on the general and Maori electoral rolls are eligible to vote in the by-election, which will be held by postal ballot.

Only those correctly enrolled will receive voting papers in the mail and be able to have a say in the election.

This made it very important for newly eligible electors to enrol as soon as possible and for those already enrolled to check that their enrolment details were up to date, Ms Skelt said.

Enrolment forms are available by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 367 656), by texting your name and address to 3676, from any Post Shop or by requesting or downloading one from the elections website, www.elections.org.nz.
