Tourism efforts marked

A cycling theme was evident in the 2010 Destination Fiordland Tourism Awards, held in Te Anau recently.

Fiordland Trails Trust chairman David Prendergast, speaking about its first project, the Te Anau-Manapouri Cycleway, announced an agreement with the Department of Conservation which would enable the cycleway to proceed within the boundaries of the national park without changes to the national park plan.

Venture Southland's Rex Capil presented an update on Southland's involvement in the New Zealand Cycle Trails' Around the Mountain Trail.

Liz Newell, of Southern Discoveries, was named winner of the Fiordland Motel Association award, recognition for her work in going the extra mile for customers.

Other recipients in the 2010 Fiordland Tourism Awards were. -Personality of the year: Daniel Anderson, The Ranch Restaurant & Bar, and The Fat Duck Cafe.

AWS legal operator of the year: Clint and Jill Tauri, Te Tauri Trust.

Bradley Cup excellence in retail: Monica and Keith Cullen, Fresh Choice.

Destination Fiordland life membership awards were presented to Isobel and John Donaldson, Glenda Chalmers, Ross Wilson, Daphne Taylor, Russell Baker, Dave Hughes, Barry and Jenny Campbell, Ray Willett and Jill Tauri.
