Woman, children injured in crash

A woman and her two children were flown to Dunedin Hospital yesterday morning with serious injuries after a head-on crash between two vehicles near Taieri Mouth.

Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Balclutha, said a station wagon and a contractor's ute collided head-on at a blind corner on Akatore Rd, near Taieri Beach school at 7.35am.

The 48-year-old female driver of the station wagon and her 8-year-old daughter suffered suspected lower-leg injuries with the girl also having pelvic injuries. Both were cut free from the vehicle by firefighters.

The woman's 6-year-old son received minor injuries, and all three were flown to Dunedin Hospital by rescue helicopter.

The 22-year-old male driver of the ute received bruising.

Sgt Dinnissen said all occupants of the station wagon were wearing seat belts but the ute driver was not, when the crash occurred on the gravel road.

Three fire appliances, two ambulances, and the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter attended the crash. Sgt Dinnissen said the Taieri Mouth volunteer rapid response team was first on the scene. The Milton police are investigating the crash.
