Members of the Clutha Youth Council have been given a $5000 fund they can use to support projects directly benefiting the district's young people.
The youth council project fund is similar to the opportunities fund made available to the Clutha District Council's district development board, which has $50,000 at its disposal for projects that have the potential to boost the region's economy.
A report prepared for Monday's Clutha Youth Council meeting in Owaka tells the council about the fund and how it is able to be used.
Council corporate services administrator Alison Ludemann said the fund was set up so the youth council could invest in activities and projects it saw as beneficial for the district's youth and its financial support for a project could be used by developers to gain leverage from other potential funders.
The system also helped youth councillors "obtain skills in working on community projects".
