‘Nice seeing lots of people biking together’

Under autumn leaves and a clear blue sky, thousands of people completed this year’s ICC Surf to City in Queens Park yesterday.

The family-friendly event offered three distances to run, cycle or walk: 12km, 6km or 3km.

The Bacarro family, of Edendale, cycled with friends from Oreti Beach, which is where the 12km event began.

Mother Jobelle Bacarro said it was good.

"It was nice seeing lots of people biking together, especially with kids."

It provided motivation to bike more, she said.

Daughter Stella (3) enjoyed the event as well.

"She thought it was a competition — she wants to race — but no, we’re just cruising."

Sport Southland chief executive Brendon McDermott said it was a fabulous day.

"There’s probably over 3000 people here today. We had a massive influx today and people have been registering over the last week."

Given the current situation around the globe with Covid-19, it was a privilege to be able to hold the event, he said.

It allowed for people to come together and connect, Mr McDermott said.

It also highlighted the importance of families being able to do things together, while enjoying what Southland had to offer.

"We just want people to be active — it doesn’t matter how you’re doing it. Whether you’re walking, running, biking, scooting — people are getting out and enjoying nature and the fresh air."

Being active was important, no matter what the activity was, he said.

In the past, ways of participating in the Surf to City had included in boats, while this year he had seen a fireman clad in his gear completing the event.

"That was pretty interesting, and would have been pretty hot on a day like today."
