Two people are dead and another person is critically injured after three separate crashes, in a horror day on southern roads yesterday.
The first fatal crash occurred near Blackhead quarry in Dunedin yesterday afternoon. Police were notified of the accident at 1.55pm.
A second person died after their car went into a ditch near Invercargill last night.
Emergency services were alerted to the crash, on State Highway 1 near the Waimatua Creek Bridge at Woodend, around 10:25pm, police said.
One person died at the scene.
The highway was closed for a time this morning while the Serious Crash Unit investigated.
In another serious crash yesterday, a person was critically injured in a two-car crash near Clinton about 5pm. They were airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.
Meanwhile, a crash on State Highway 1 near Balclutha affected traffic for a time on Sunday morning.
Police said they were alerted to a ute rolling on the highway in the Lovells Flat area about 10.30am. No-one was injured, but the road was down to one lane for a time.
