Man killed in Invercargill crash named

Police have confirmed the man who died following in an Invercargill crash two weeks ago was 77-year-old Selwyn John Gibson.

The incident occurred on January 15 when a car and truck collided on Dee St just before 1pm.

A witness said the vehicle was pulling out of Avenal St onto Dee St when it hit the truck.

Invercargill chief fire investigator Murray Milne-Maresca was travelling South on Dee St behind the car at the time of the crash.

"The car collided and came straight towards us so it was right in front of me. When it hit the truck it was dragged towards me and hit the island.''

Firefighters used rescue equipment, known as the ''jaws of life'', to remove the roof and doors of the vehicle to gain access to the driver and remove him.

Mr Milne-Maresca said the driver of the truck, which was owned by Ryal Bush Transport, appeared ''severely traumatised''.

However, the driver did not suffer any injuries.
