Tahakopa School pupils (from left) Casey Osborne (12), Clark Napier (8), Isabella Jenks (12), Braydee Osborne (11), Liam Barrett (8), Sarah Stephens (9), Jacquelyn Barrett (5) and Alex Napier (10), along with teacher aide Carol Giessler (back), hitch a ride on a heavy wagon.

Two chooks crossed the main street and there was an armed hold-up that may go down in history.

Eight "bandits'', the entire Tahakopa School roll, "held up'' participants on the Cobb and Co heavy wagon trail, part of the Otago Goldfields Cavalcade.

Toy weapons were brandished and money exchanged hands.

"What a haul!'' one child enthused as coins were tossed and notes handed over.

The pupils then climbed into the back of a wagon and enjoyed a ride around the area.

"I never ever thought I'd see something like this in Tahakopa,'' bus-driver-come-school-caretaker-come-jack-of-all-trades Angela Osborne said.

School principal Katrina Hampton said the school did not get many visitors, in fact most people did not even know it existed.

"This is amazing - this is just incredible for the kids,'' she said.

It would be up to the children how the money was spent. It may go towards a trip to Wellington later this year.

The cavalcade finishes on Saturday when about 500 participants converge on Owaka.
