Icy blast brings snow

Summer sports at Cardrona Alpine Resort were closed yesterday after an icy blast from the south overnight brought the first snow of the year.

All mountain-bike and cart trails were covered with about 5cm of snow.

A resort spokesman said the gondola opened at noon for guests to enjoy sightseeing and to make snowmen.

The resort was expected to be back to normal summer operations today.
