Tourist charged over West Coast accident

A Canadian tourist in a campervan has been charged after he hit a motorcyclist in the Buller Gorge yesterday afternoon.

The 24-year-old man was exiting a layby near the gorge swing bridge about 12.30pm when his campervan was involved in a collision with a motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist was airlifted to Nelson Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The tourist and his passenger were not injured.

He will appear in the Nelson District Court on Monday charged with careless use of a motor vehicle.
