Volunteering with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) in Manapouri is about far more than simply responding to emergencies — it’s about serving the community, supporting one another and building lifelong friendships along the way.

For members of the Manapouri Volunteer Fire Brigade, one of the most rewarding parts of volunteering is the strong sense of camaraderie that develops within the team. Volunteers work closely together during training, callouts and community events, often forming lasting friendships not only with fellow firefighters, but also with their families and the wider community.

Members say there is a real sense of pride in knowing they are helping people during difficult times and supporting those who may not otherwise be able to help themselves.

The Manapouri brigade responds to a wide variety of emergencies throughout the year, including structural fires, vegetation fires, motor vehicle accidents and medical callouts. Every incident is different, and volunteers are trained to work safely and effectively in a range of situations.

Manapouri’s stunning landscape is home to the iconic hydro-electric power station, a vital part of New Zealand’s renewable energy network and a key feature of the local area.

Fenz provides extensive training opportunities for volunteers, helping members work towards personal goals and qualifications. Depending on the role, this can include pump operation, first aid certification and gaining a class 2 licence.

There are also many different ways people can volunteer within the brigade. Operational firefighters may wear breathing apparatus and carry out internal fire attacks and search and rescue work inside buildings. Other volunteers support the brigade through administration, welfare support, traffic management, first aid and assisting at vegetation fires, motor vehicle accidents and other incidents.

Members say one of the biggest benefits of joining the Manapouri brigade is the opportunity to gain valuable life skills and personal development through ongoing training and teamwork. Fenz area trainers and volunteer support officers work closely with brigades to ensure volunteers are supported throughout every stage of training and progression.

Training is designed to work around volunteers where possible, with many courses held on weekends, although some longer courses may require time away from work during the year.

Overall, brigade members say being part of the Manapouri Volunteer Fire Brigade provides a strong sense of wellbeing and purpose, knowing they are helping support their community while working alongside a dedicated group of people committed to making a difference.
