The week’s activities were organised by Inspired Faith Church members.
Church pastor Patrick Laban said the group always celebrated Independence Day at King’s Birthday even though it was January 1, 1962, when Samoa gained independence from New Zealand.
Those who gathered to celebrate on June 1 began the day with a march from Central Baptist church to the Civic Administration Building.
Marching was "our traditional way of celebrating back home", he said.
About 100 people took part.
The group had permission from the council to raise the Samoan flag on the flagstaff outside the council building. This was the first time this had happened which was "pretty awesome", Mr Laban said.
Other events of the day included a car parade through the city, a church service and sports.
"It was a very, very blessed day seeing everyone enjoy celebrating."
As part of Samoan Language week two workshops were held.
It was important for the young people to learn about their culture, especially as they were not living in Samoa, Mr Laban said.
