People taking part in a golf tournament next month will be teeing off for a purpose.

Otatara man Scott Whitaker is organising The Par for Purpose golf tournament to raise funds for Hospice Southland.

The tournament will be held at the Invercargill Golf Course in Otatara on February 13.

Mr Whitaker said running the tournament was one way he could give back to hospice for the excellent care his parents Ray and Carolyn received in the last days of their lives.

"So they [hospice] did an amazing job for the family back then."

Within six months both his parents had received a terminal cancer diagnosis and died.

"It was a very quick.

"We didn’t even know they were both sick.

"They had no symptoms or signs or anything.

"It was a big shock to the family that year."

He enjoyed playing golf and thought a tournament would be a good way to raise money for hospice.

"I think it’s something that we can have a bit of fun with.

"You don’t need to be a golfer to play this day.

"This is really about raising funds for hospice and having a fun day."

There had been a good response already with businesses sponsoring some of the holes on the course.

Signed All Black, New Zealand Warriors and Southland Stags jerseys would be auctioned but there were many prizes on offer.

There was still space for teams of four to take part and people can find details on how to enter on the tournament’s Facebook page.
