Having moved to Milford Sound a year ago and planning to stay for the foreseeable future, the volunteer was looking for a new challenge that would provide opportunities to learn skills, meet people and give back to the place they now call home.
What they discovered was a brigade unlike any other.
Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world each year. During the busy season, as many as 3000 to 4000 people can pass through the area in a single day. Yet despite the constant flow of tourists, the local volunteer brigade consists of just 16 members.

Callouts can range from motor vehicle accidents on the Milford Highway to injuries sustained during recreational activities and workplace medical events. In many situations, volunteers provide vital initial assistance and reassurance while patients wait for advanced medical care to arrive.
The challenges faced by the brigade are unique. Milford Sound’s closest emergency support is based in Te Anau, about 120km away. Depending on conditions, help can be more than 90 minutes away by road, making local volunteers an essential first response resource.
The Milford Sound Volunteer Fire Brigade is also known for bringing the community together. Unlike many workplaces in the area, the brigade welcomes people from all backgrounds, industries and nationalities. Members include permanent residents and transient workers from around the world, creating a diverse and inclusive team united by a common goal.

With Milford Sound located on the Alpine Fault, volunteers recognise the importance of emergency preparedness. Brigade members believe every person trained in emergency response strengthens the community’s ability to cope during major events.
In Milford Sound, the brigade truly embodies the motto: “Few Serving Many”.
