Southern truck driver, 42-year trucking veteran and Bill Richardson Memorial Truck Rally participant Bobby Bates, of Invercargill, is one of 103 drivers taking their trucks to Invercargill this week to mark 20 years since Mr Richardson’s death.

The convoy, including Mr Bates and his 1994 Mack in Southern livery, rested in Oamaru last night, after leaving Christchurch on Wednesday.

The trucks are headed to Invercargill as part of the rally to honour Mr Richardson’s legacy and mark what would have been his 85th birthday today.

Mr Richardson turned a passion for trucks into one of the country’s largest privately owned transport firms, the HW Richardson Group.

His daughter, Jocelyn O’Donnell, said she was thrilled with the turnout and the rally was a great way to commemorate her father.

The public will be able to see the convoy as it leaves its overnight home at Road Metals in Oamaru at 8.30am today to make its way south to McLellan Freight in Balclutha by 11.30am.

The trucks are scheduled to depart Balclutha at 1pm and be in Invercargill by about 3pm, where they will do a lap of the city.

Participants will attend a dinner at Bill Richardson Transport World tonight.
