Bowls: Benz big prize in charity fours

A $40,000 Mercedes-Benz is among the prizes in the 14th annual Kittyhawk Charity Fours tournament in Dunedin on Sunday.

The car is one of the top prizes offered in a bowls tournament in New Zealand.

Forty-two teams have entered for the fours tournament and they all have a chance to win the car, which has been donated by Armstrong Prestige.

But there is a catch. It is a bonus prize that will be given to a team only if it wins every end during the tournament.

It could be mission impossible, as each team will play four games of 12 ends.

The winner will be decided on a points system. Tournament headquarters Taieri will use its two greens, and there is a third green at Fairfield.

The tournament is being played to raise funds for Camp Quality (South). Rugby league star Stacey Jones, an ambassador for Camp Quality, will be the special guest at the aftermatch function.

In the past 13 years, Kittyhawk Bowls has raised $65,000 for charity at its Dunedin tournaments.

Last year's national under-20 champion, Sam Morton (Fairfield), will be skipping a team in the tournament.

Other teams in contention are skipped by Geoff Hanna (Mornington), Robbie Gibson (Taieri), Sue Hodges (Outram), Dorothy Burnard (Green Island) and Carolyn Crawford (St Clair).
