Chris Le Lievre (Onehunga) hated being beaten by the Australians this year and wants to put the boot into them next time.

Le Lievre (24), who is studying sports journalism at Auckland University, was a member of the New Zealand under-25 team that was beaten by Australia in the transtasman clash last season.

"We didn't play well," he said.

"I'd give my left arm to be in the team again next year and beat them in Auckland."

Le Lievre, the lead in the triples and fours, has deliberately chosen the lead role in order to play with the big guns.

"That is where I can find my niche and I want to settle in there," he said.

"My goal is to get as much experience as I can as a lead."

He started competitive bowls as a 15-year-old, when he was a pupil at Howick College.

It was a natural transition because he lived just 100m away from the bowling club where his father, Brett Le Lievre, played.

"I used to go over to the green and watch Dad play and have a roll up when I could," he said.

Bowls is a family sport and a cousin, Emma Le Lievre, has played for the New Zealand under-18 women's team in the transtasman tests against Australia.

He does not believe he has any great natural gifts as a bowler.

He just puts in the hard work and knows that it will bring results.

Le Lievre also enlists the help of some of the big names in the sport and has been helped by 2002 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mike Kernaghan and double world champion Gary Lawson.

He has played with fellow Onehunga player Dan Delany for the past five years and they have won two New Zealand Pathways titles in the triples (2008) and pairs (2009).
