Left-arm seamer Tom Clout has been named in the Otago first-class team to play Auckland at Eden Park starting tomorrow.

Clout made the move south from Northern Districts this season in hope of cracking the Otago Volts squad.

He linked up with the Albion club and has also been playing some cricket for Otago A.

He is replacing all-rounder Nathan Smith in the 12. Smith has had a busy workload and is being rested.

Clout may end up carrying the drinks, though. Jacob Duffy is likely to take the new ball with Warren Barnes, which will leave Matt Bacon and Clout competing for the other seamer's spot.

''He has a chance,'' Volts coach Rob Walter responded when asked if Clout would make his debut.

''We needed another seamer in our squad but we'll see what the conditions are like and make a decision to best balance the team.''

Clout operates at medium pace and can move the new ball both ways.

''That adds variation otherwise our bowling line-up is fairly similar,'' Walter said.

Middle-order batsman and part-time seamer Josh Finnie has been overlooked for selection, while former international spinner Mark Craig is still recovering from an ongoing back injury.

''He is getting closer and closer to starting. He will play some competitive cricket this weekend and that is just part of his return-to-play process. But it is good news.''

Opener Cam Hawkins gets another opportunity at the expense of veteran top-order player Brad Wilson.

Hawkins has scored 167 runs in two games at an average of 41.75. It is a good start but what has arguably been the most impressive aspect has been his ability to occupy the crease and bat sessions.

He has a bright future against the red ball if he can continue to spend long stints in the middle.

Otago (10 points) has strung together four consecutive losses in the Plunket Shield and is in last place in the standings. Auckland (46 points) has two wins, a draw and a loss from its four games and is in third place.

Central Districts leads the standings with 57 points from Northern Districts (46 points). Wellington (40) and Canterbury (32) are in the bottom half of the standings but are still in contention.
