Cricket: Heavy loss for Volts against Canterbury

Otago have slumped to a big loss in their Plunket Shield match against Canterbury in Christchurch this morning.

Set the unlikely target of 553 for victory, Otago resumed day four at Hagley Oval this morning on 213 for six, trailing by 340 runs.

The game was over when the visitors fell to 248 for 9, as Sean Eathorne was unable to bat after having retired hurt yesterday, giving Canterbury a huge 304 run victory.

Eathorne, playing his first four-day game for the province in nine years, was struck in the back of the shoulders by a bouncer from Logan van Beek.

Van Beek was the star for Canterbury, taking eight wickets in the match, including six in the second innings, to go with an unbeaten 111 in his side's first innings.
