Cricket: N. Otago thrashed in cup qualification game

South Canterbury beat North Otago by 10 wickets yesterday in a two-day Hawke Cup qualification match at Whitestone Contracting stadium.

North Otago put South Canterbury in on the first day and Craig Davies (19) and Richie Preston (44) produced an opening stand of 51 before Davies was dismissed.

South Canterbury lost Preston and Ed Kilbee with the total at 67 but an 85-run partnership between Ben McCord (48) and Bill Walsh (41) took the total through to 152. South Canterbury then lost its next four wickets for the addition of only 12 runs before Mark Tutton (16) and Glen Matthews (36) featured in a ninth-wicket stand of 49 before the final wicket fell at 227.

David Sewell and Tim McCormick took four wickets each for North Otago.

South Canterbury had North Otago at 55 for four at stumps with Dan Laming taking three for 16 off his six overs. North Otago lasted only an hour on the second day before the side was dismissed for 96 and forced to follow on. Only Stephan Grobler (21) and Sean Eathorne (30) reaching double figures.

Laming finished with four for 22 while Ben McCord claimed three for 35. Those three wickets came from four balls as he dismissed Jordan Horrell, Tim McCormick and Darcy Hooper-Smith in one over. Sam Carlaw whipped through the tail to take two for four off nine balls.

Following on, North Otago went to lunch on the second day at 22 for three and the decline continued after lunch with the 10th wicket falling just on tea with the total at 142 meaning South Canterbury needed to bat again and make 12 runs to win.

Stephan Grobler (25) and Jordan Horrell (37) put up some resistance but it was the bowlers' day with Ben Watson taking three for 32 and Glen Matthews and Bill Walsh took two wickets each.
