Ryder would have been recruited by Essex for his abilities with the bat but he proved equally proficient with the ball in their draw with Kent this week.
After claiming 5-54 in his side's first innings in the field, Ryder followed that impressive haul with a second five-wicket bag, picking up 5-56 as the match petered out to a draw overnight (NZT).
The result saw Essex move to third in the division two table and saw Ryder record new best figures for a first class innings and match (10-110), more than making up for a cheap dismissal with the bat.
Ryder had already shown his wares at the bowling crease since heading to Essex for the winter, taking 10 wickets in seven matches since joining the province.
The 29-year-old quickly doubled that tally, pressing his case as a genuine all-rounder.
