Otago players prepare for season

Otago fast bowler Michael Rae will find out this morning whether he will make his Australian grade cricket debut.

Rae and fellow seamer Warren Barnes were dispatched to Sydney to play in the New South Wales Premier Cricket one-day competition to complete their preparations for the New Zealand domestic season.

Barnes made his debut for Northern District Cricket Club last weekend, helping the team to a 102-run win against Fairfield-Liverpool.

While he struggled with his run-up and conceded five no-balls, he bowled well at the death and has been named in the team for this weekend's match against Mosman.

Otago coach Rob Walter said Rae missed the opening match with a shoulder niggle but he hopes to be fit for the game against Mosman.

"He had an injection on Tuesday and has a fitness test [this morning] to see whether he will play in the weekend," Walter said.

Rae brought a lot of energy to the Otago first-class team last season and he shapes as important player in the attack again this summer. But he has played just two one-day games at domestic level and will be hoping he can get some overs in while across the Tasman.

"These things happen. Bowlers pick up injuries - it is just par for the course really.

"Hopefully the injection that he had takes and he is good to go for the last two weekends."

The Volts have been in camp in Alexandra since Tuesday and played an intrasquad one-day match at Molyneux Park yesterday.

The gold side reached 310 for nine. Josh Finnie and Nathan Smith scored half centuries and Brad Wilson, Neil Broom and Mark Craig posted scores in the 40s.

Anaru Kitchen was the pick of the bowlers for the blue team with three for 29. His side did not manage much of a chase, though. It was bowled out for 135.

Jacob Duffy took three wickets and spinners Craig and Michael Rippon claimed two apiece.

Otago's preparations conclude next week with a warm-up one-day match against Canterbury in Alexandra on Tuesday followed by a three day game at Molyneux Park.

It will be the last hit out for the side before its daunting opening Plunket Shield match against Northern Districts beginning on October 10.

The Black Caps are available for the opening round of the first-class tournament, so Otago could face a Northern side with as many as seven frontline Black Caps.

Trent Boult is on baby watch and may miss the match. But there will not be much reprieve for Otago's green-looking top order, as Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Colin de Grandhomme and Ish Sodhi are expected to play.

Kane Williamson and BJ Watling will strengthen the batting considerably as well.
