Weather has final say in Hawke Cup

Weather was a very clear winner of Hawke Cup qualifying games at the weekend.

Both clashes in zone 4 were abandoned without play.

Otago Country was desperate to get maximum points from its clash against South Canterbury in Timaru, but Aorangi Oval was in no state for cricket.

The game was transferred to Pleasant Point but hopes of some play yesterday were quickly squashed.

In Oamaru, a potentially juicy clash between North Otago and Southland also turned into a damp squib.

All four teams get five points.

Top spot still remains up for grabs ahead of the final round of games on February 26-27.

Southland (21 points) hosts South Canterbury (10), and Mid Canterbury (5) hosts North Otago (17).

Otago Country is tied with Southland on 21 but has completed its campaign. If those teams remain tied after the round robin, Southland would rank higher as it beat Country on the first innings

North Otago will need to get some points against Mid Canterbury, and hope Southland does not get any points in its game, if North Otago is to challenge for the Hawke Cup on March 11-13.

Hawke’s Bay remains the holder after only 53 overs were possible in its defence against Bay of Plenty.

Canterbury Country has the next challenge.
