Six secondary school football teams have advanced to the main draw of the 83rd Chatham Cup after winning their qualification round ties this weekend.

After winning their preliminary round ties in early April, Rongotai College and Wellington College extended their cup runs, with Rongotai upsetting Capital first division side Wainuiomata 1-0 yesterday and Wellington College beating Waikanae 4-0 today.

Their four northern region counterparts made it six from six for the school sides as Westlake Boys' High School beat Cambridge 2-0 to claim a Northern League division one scalp, a feat matched by Auckland's Saint Peter's College, who beat Papakura City 2-1 away from home.

Mount Albert Grammar School got their campaign underway with a 3-1 win over Clevedon while Auckland Grammar School notched a 4-1 win over Beachlands Maraetai.

It wasn't such a good start for Auckland Sunday league sides hoping to build a cup run, with Bohemian Celtic suffering a 2-8 loss to Mount Albert Ponsonby and Internationale crashing 0-7 out at home to Warkworth.

Norwest Old Boys also lost, 1-4 to Oratia, leaving Brew Town FC the sole Sunday league side in Wednesday's draw for the first round proper thanks to a resounding 8-0 win over Glen Eden United.

There was also an early double helping of penalty shootout drama, with Levin shading Brooklyn Northern United 4-3 on spot kicks after a goalless draw in Wellington's yesterday and Stop Out holding their nerve against Kapiti Coast United to win their shootout 4-2 after fulltime and extra time scores were locked at 1-1 .

The Chatham Cup final is in early September.
