Otago football great Mike McGarry has been flying the flag for the South, as one of the ambassadors for the Fifa Under-20 World Cup next year.

McGarry has been travelling with the trophy, unveiling it at major spots around the South Island.

The tour was intended to help raise the profile of the prestigious event, as well as allow people to see the trophy firsthand.

''I was talking about what it means to have the [World] Cup here, and how special the opportunity is to see some of the world's best players live,'' McGarry said.

''Almost all these guys play professionally. The talent will be superb.''

McGarry played 87 games for the All Whites ''In terms of skill level, this is the best New Zealand junior side I've seen. I think we have to potential to do very well.

''If we're matched up against a team like Argentina or Brazil, then naturally it's going to be tougher to advance.''

Homegrown talent Joel Stevens has been named in the 19-man Junior All Whites squad. Stevens, an old boy of both Otago Boys' High School and Kaikorai Valley College, is now based in Wellington.

The games will be played at Forsyth Barr Stadium (Otago Stadium throughout the tournament).

Cup tickets go on public sale on June 13. However, the official draw will not take place until February next year, so they will be sold as venue tickets.
