Utd women focusing on attack

A stronger attacking line-up and some added depth has the Southern United women's team confident before the National Football League season.

The team plays the first of its six league games late next month, taking on Canterbury United Pride on October 23, and is well into its preparations.

''The squad's looking pretty tidy, probably a bit more depth than we've had in previous years, a few new faces as well,'' coach Hayley Stirling said.

While she would not elaborate when asked for names, Stirling confirmed there would be more of an attacking threat this year.

''Traditionally we've looked at our defensive play, just because of the personnel we may have had, or not having the attacking impetus in the team.

''But this year we feel we've got a far stronger attacking line-up and we want to utilise that and make it a key part of our playing system.''

A squad of 30 had been training for the past month, but that would be cut to 24. Assistant coach Tom Stevens said there would be some tough decisions in terms of selection, which pointed towards a good season.

He said there was an excitement in the squad and a feeling that the past few years had been building towards this one.

The side has had one training game, against the Otago 15th grade boys' team, and will play that team again tomorrow night. These games were being used to try out different combinations as the team looked to gel.

On Sunday, it will have its first ''proper'' pre-season game, against Mainland in Timaru.

''I think you've got to be confident going into these kind of campaigns,'' she said.

''We only have six games so there's not a lot of time to get a flow going, so we've got to be able to prepare the best we can so we can hit the ground running.

''The trainings have been really good ... and we feel we're getting better with every session we have together.''

Caversham's Andrew Ridden and Dunedin Technical's Kirsty Hayr were named men's and women's club players of the year at the Football South season awards at the weekend.

Ben O'Farrell won young male player of the year and Lara Wall young female player of the year. Dunedin Technical won the Hanlin Shield for the most successful overall club.
