Kiwi rally star Hayden Paddon has ''very fond memories'' of the Argentinian round of the World Rally Championship, which runs from Friday to Monday.

It was the scene of his Production World Rally Championship win with co-driver John Kennard in 2011 and was the event in which they claimed their first WRC victory last year.

The past results will provide inspiration for Paddon, who acknowledges he has not had the best start to the year.

''It is one of the roughest events on the calendar, and depending on the weather conditions, this will influence the rally a lot. Looking after the car is also key and while it would be nice to get the taste of Champagne again, we head into this rally after some thorough preparation to push hard,'' Paddon said.

He will compete in the all-gravel South American event with his Hyundai i20 Coupe world rally car following a successful two-day test on gravel before the previous tarmac WRC event in Corsica, where he finished sixth.

''We know we can be competitive, but the competition is much closer this year, so, as always, we will be giving it a good go. The focus is never on others' expectations; it's about getting some momentum and confidence back, and if we can do that, the results will flow,'' Paddon said.

He and Kennard have been back in New Zealand since Corsica, and although Paddon celebrated his 30th birthday with family in Wanaka, he did not stint on his training. He competed in the 125km Epic mountain bike race around Lake Hawea on Saturday.

Based in the lakeside resort of Villa Carlos Paz, 700km northwest of Buenos Aires, Rally Argentina features 18 special stages, totalling 357.59 competitive kilometres and a massive total distance of 1417.98km.

''The route has much the same stages as last year, so this gives us confidence as they are stages we enjoy and have good information from. After last year's result, naturally it's nice to go back to this event and that success gives us more confidence, particularly on the gravel surface with which I'm most familiar,'' Paddon said.

He told Michelin Motorsport that he has ''very fond memories'' of Argentina, not only because of his success there but also the huge spectator presence and the varied three days of rallying, which include vast pampas plains, rugged mountains and lakeside landscapes.

Paddon and Kennard will start the first day eighth on the road in the No4 Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC, based on their championship position. On Saturday and Sunday WRC competitors will run in reverse rally classification.
