Silver Fern and Southern Steel defender Katrina Grant took a brief break from training yesterday to lead a coaching session at Mornington School.

About 20 girls aged from eight to 11 swamped Grant after the session, wanting an autograph.

Mornington netball team won the opportunity when it created a winning Southern Steel chant.

Grant enjoyed the opportunity and said she had "learnt as much from them" as they did her.

When asked what she had been doing during the off-season, Grant responded: "Training, training, training."

"This is pretty much the time where you get fit and strong in preparation for the season," she said.

After an inauspicious start to the ANZ Championship, Grant got better with each match and forced her way into the Silver Ferns squad.

She made an impressive debut, helping her side beat Australia 38-31.

But despite reaching international status, Grant will have her hands full making the Steel's starting line-up this season with experienced defenders Megan Hutton and Sheryl Scanlan in the squad.

"It is going to be pretty hectic in that circle with Sheryl, myself and Megan all competing for spots."

Grant was looking forward to a two-week break over the holiday period before heading to Invercargill for more training sessions.
