Invercargill father and son John and Stuart Sutherland helped Southland competitors take a big haul of trophies home from the Otago Clay Target Championships in Alexandra over the weekend.

Stuart claimed the high gun trophy awarded to the weekend's best shooter with a score of 230/235 over six events.

His father, John, secured the B grade high gun with a score of 206/235.

Stuart also claimed the overall titles in the single rise and triples events.

Twenty-eight of 83 shooters at the event shot the 25/25 to qualify for the single rise shoot-off.

Stuart was the last man standing and won the title after hitting 133 targets.

The Sutherlands are both members of the Southland Clay Target club in Invercargill.

Their clubmates added to the Southland haul.

Last year's high gun, Shannon Evans, won the skeet title and Michael Dobbie won the points score event.

The minis and single barrel titles both went to Canterbury shooters.

Gavin Searle, of the Mead Te Pirita Gun Club, won the minis and Mike Sime, of Timaru Clay Target Club, won the single barrel.

Barrytown Sports and Gun Club shooter Peter Shuttleworth won the double rise title.

The highly popular three-day Bodkin Shield clay target event is the next major shoot on the southern calendar.

It will be contested at the Moa Creek, Alexandra and Wanaka clubs on August 17-19.
