The Otago Daily Times counts down the 150 greatest moments in Otago sport.

No 85: Bjorn to win (1983)

It was the highest-profile tennis match ever played in Dunedin.

Bjorn Borg, winner of 11 grand slam singles titles, against New Zealand's best, 1983 Wimbledon finalist Chris Lewis.

It was played at Dunedin Stadium on December 19, 1983 and enthusiasm was huge. Temporary seating was installed to enable the venue to hold 5100 spectators and the match began 33 minutes late, because of the long queues outside.

It was a night to remember. The rain pounded on the stadium roof but, inside, the crowd was spellbound as they watched one of the greats combat a strong challenge from Lewis.

The fans had their money's worth. It was after midnight before Borg, having won a third set tiebreaker, won in four sets: 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Lewis, terrier-like, chased everything but in the end it was the ice-cool Swede whose serve and all-round game proved superior. Both players were given a standing ovation.

Borg described the atmosphere as "something special".

Lewis said it was "incredible" and suggested New Zealand should play a Davis Cup tie at the stadium in mid-winter.

Sadly, that has not happened but no-one will forget the night the two stars slugged it out in Dunedin.
