All Black Hosea Gear has been named Maori sportsperson of the year.
The 26-year-old wing was named both the Albie Pryor memorial Maori sportsperson of the Year and senior Maori sportsman at the 2010 Maori sports awards in Auckland tonight.
Gear played in strong seasons for the Hurricanes and Lions, and was awarded a Commonwealth Games gold medal for Rugby Sevens in Dehli this year.
The 1.88m, 100kg player also scored five tries in four tests during the All Black's backing black tour.
The 20th national Maori sports awards ceremony was held at TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau.
