The South Canterbury Development XV beat its North Otago counterparts 32-10 in the curtain-raiser at Timaru on Saturday.
The South Canterbury star was halfback Willy Wright who kicked six penalties and two conversions for a total of 22 points.
North Otago held South Canterbury in the first half with it 10-10 at halftime, Wright kicking a penalty and converting a try by prop Aki Savali, and for North Otago centre Steve Smith scored a try which Mark Roney converted, and he added a penalty.
The only try in the second half was a penalty try to South Canterbury, which Wright converted, and he kicked five further penalties.
Hockey
Pirata Black and Pirata Blue fought out a 1-1 draw in senior hockey on Saturday, with Shane Emerson scoring for the Blacks and Deon Bridger for the Blues.
• Waitaki Boys' Second X1 beat Shamrocks 6-4 with Jayden Caldwell scoring twice for Waitaki Boys, while Ray Simpson got a double for Shamrocks.
• The North Otago Boys' under-13 side beat St Kevin's Mixed 4-1 with Caleb Ludemann and Josh Cunningham scoring twice for the under-13 side.
• Waitaki Girls' Second X1 beat the North Otago Girls' under 13 side 3-1, while in games played late in the week Pirata Blue beat Waitaki Boys' Second X1 3-0, and St Kevin's Girls' First X1 beat Shamrocks 9-3.
Indoor bowls
The Champion of Champions fours title for 2011 was won by the Wesley team of Andrew Robb, Gordon Robb, Stefan Robb and Diana McGregor which beat the Meadowbank team of Judy Mitchell, Scott Guyton, Doreen Hill and Joan Robb 13-5.
• The Friday night pairs tournament was won by the Awamoko team of Wally and Geoff Strachan which beat the Waitaki Bridge team of Cliff Ormandy and Andy Blakeley 6-4.
