Waitaki Boys' High School, Union and Valley all recorded wins in the first round of Borton Cup cricket played on Saturday.

Waitaki Boys' put Oamaru in to bat at Milner Park and dismissed it for 137 in the 48th over. Stephan Grobler took three for 14 and Adrian Myburgh, two for 28. Josh Gutsell (25) and Gary Mahuika (20) were the best of the Oamaru batsmen.

Aided by some steady batting from Hayden Tisdall (22), Lachiue Kingan (31 n.o.) and Matt Day (28), Waitaki Boys' passed the Oamaru total with seven wickets in hand.Oamaru captain Regan George took two for 29 off seven overs.

Union, asked to bat first by Albion at King George Park, was dismissed in the 42nd over for 189. Glynn Cameron (34) and Thomas Shields (37) added 72 for the fifth wicket and included in the Union total were 40 wides. Ricky Whyte took three wickets for 26, Gareth Duncan two for 40 and Wade Moore three for 11, off 5.3 overs.

Albion was dismissed for 79 in the 37th over. The pick of the Union bowlers were Glynn Cameron (two for seven off 10 overs, Chris Ware (two for 20), Paul Johnston (three for 12) and Isaac Shields (two for five).

Valley, sent in by St Kevin's College was dismissed for 147 in the 44th over, Cooper Smith top-scoring with 31. Tim McCormick, Tim Cotter and Tim O'Malley took two wickets each and Sean Kelliher claimed three for 44.

St Kevin's was 99 for seven after 34 overs. Player coach Tim McCormick was 38 not out. Geoff Mavor, Blair Malcolm and Andrew Fisher took two wickets each for Valley and Tom Squire claimed three for 28 off eight overs.

Bowls
Awamoa Blue, Phoenix Maroon, Meadowbank Green and Kurow all had 2-0 wins in the first round of the Mills Shield fours competition on Saturday morning.

In the Sevens competition in the afternoon only Meadowbank Gold had a 3-0 win.
