CENTRAL OTAGO

Naseby picked up its second win in as many matches in the Maniototo Eastern Districts cricket competition on Saturday afternoon when it beat Waikouaiti by 10 wickets at home.

The visitors batted first and Brad Williams and Murray Dempster led the charge with 45 and 44 runs respectively.

John McMillan restricted their score to 160 for eight, taking three for 24, while Blair Brown and Tim McMillan had two wickets each with the ball.

The chase saw an impressive innings from both opening batsmen, each finishing not out. Brown was in on the action again when he scored 87 while opening partner Ian Forester continued his good early-season form with 68 after falling two short of a century last week.

• At Palmerston, Ranfurly picked up a four-wicket win over the home side as it was skittled for just 95 in the 40th over.

Batting first, Palmerston could only manage 20 from Jeff Grubb thanks to Kieran Parker's four for 7 with the ball for Ranfurly. Liam Dowling also finished with tidy figures of two for 21 off his eight overs.

The chase was not as straightforward as Ranfurly would have hoped, losing six wickets in the process. Chris Miller scored 31 not out to lead his side to the victory but not before Cam Grubb finished with the best bowling figures of the day with three for 6 off his eight overs.

• The other match scheduled between Macraes and Gimmerburn resulted in a win to Gimmerburn by default.

• Alexandra managed a four-wicket win over Blacks Hill at Poolburn in the Vincent twenty/20 competition cutting it fine and leaving just one ball to spare in the chase.

Blacks Hill made a modest 104 all out with Alan Small making 32 with the bat. Russell Nevill also batted well, scoring 24. Brendan Domigan was by far the pick of the Alexandra bowlers, taking four for 15 off 3.3 overs. Ben Purvis and Dave Lilley each picked up two wickets also.

Domigan then got into the act with the bat, scoring 38 not out to lead his side to the win.

Andrew McGregor chipped in with 18. Cam Nicolson was the best of the Blacks Hill bowlers with three for 23 off his four overs.

• At Anderson Park in Cromwell, Albion suffered its first loss in the twenty/20 tournament, registering just 99 in its chase to reach 150.

The home side batted first in the match and Regan Heal shone with the bat, opening the innings and scoring 54 including whacking four sixes.

He had support from Mickey Ritchie, who fell three short of his half century when he was caught leg before wicket by Gareth Tate. Tate finished with three for 30 off his four overs and Cromwell was 149 for four after 20.

The reply saw Albion opener Jonathan Homer bat well for 26 while Dylan Edwards scored 19. Extras accounted for 28 of Albion's 99 runs off its 20 overs, 50 runs short of the target. Alex Pasco was the best of Cromwell's bowlers taking three for 17. Jason Clark and Andy Ritchie picked up a couple of wickets each.

Softball
Dunstan and Alexandra played out a thriller in the latest round of Central Otago softball action, Dunstan remaining unbeaten this year after a 12-11 win.

Bridgit Milne was the hero for Dunstan with the side's only home run while Ashleigh McHardy hit her own home run for Alexandra.

Dunstan Ex Girls hammered Queenstown 24-5 with five home runs hit, two of those to going to Sophie Johns, and the Junior Girls beat Maniototo Area School 16-15 in their match. Simone Keane hit a decisive home run for Junior Girls.

Bowls
In the latest round of the Maniototo sub-centre pennants competition, all 12 matches were a close contest, the closest coming from the match between Tony Andrews (Waipiata) and Bill Morice (Naseby), Andrews getting home 21-19.

Three other matches played had just six points being the difference with Ken Weir (Ranfurly), Stuart Hore (Naseby) and Ray Kearney (Ranfurly) coming out on top.

• In the ECNZ Trophy competition, RSA 2 was the only team to pick up three wins in round 7 of the tournament. Ten other teams managed two wins and it was only Clyde 5 that failed to register a win.

Alexandra CB leads the competition with 30 points from Alexandra R, RSA 2 and Alexandra C on 29 and 27 points respectively.

Out West, Queenstown leads the standings after five rounds on 30.832 points with Wanaka in second on 26.65 and Bannockburn on 22.

John Barton, Neville Young and Stan Kane were also winners over the weekend in progressive pennants action at the Wanaka Bowling Club.

NORTH OTAGO

Union maintained its 10-point lead in Borton Cup cricket with a 72-run win over Albion at Awamoa Park but Waitaki Boys' High School is applying some pressure with a four-wicket win over Oamaru as it stays just 10 points behind the leaders. St Kevin's College moved up the ladder to share third place with Albion on 20 points after it beat Valley by 32 runs.

Union was put in to bat by Albion, and with Jeremiah Shields (42) and Sean Conlan (52) putting pressure on the Albion attack, Union went through to 146 before the final wicket fell with the total at 146 in the 48th over.

There must be some concern in the Union ranks as the last nine wickets fell for only 32 runs and the last six wickets added just 19 runs with Marshall Smith taking three for 26 and Dylan Winter and Paul Odell taking two wickets each for Albion.

• Albion never really got into the game to be 58 for eight after 21 overs before the side succumbed to be all out for 74. Duncan Drew finished with five for seven off five overs to destroy Albion.

St Kevin's College was asked to bat first by Valley and with promising young batsman Tim O'Malley in fine form, the College side made 186 for five in its 50 overs.

O'Malley was unbeaten on 64, with Jeremy Smith on 22 while Brodie Flannery added 26. Hamish McKenzie took three for 30.

• Valley needed 187 to win but slumped to 89 for eight after 26 overs. Only Brad McKenzie (30) showed some resistance while O'Malley completed a fine double, taking five for 25 and Brad Kingan three for 27.

Waitaki Boys' put Oamaru into bat but Oamaru, after being 30 without loss, collapsed to 76 for four but batted through its 50 overs to be dismissed for 154 in the 40th over. Anthony Sewell (31) and Matt Murphy (31) held the side together, while for Waitaki Boys', Stephan Groblar took three for 17 and George Inwood three for 20.

Guided by an innings of 60 from Stephan Groblar and 31 from Hayden Tisdall, Waitaki Boys passed the Oamaru total at 138 for six in the 34th over. Gary Clearwater took two for 22 while veteran David Sewell took three for 27 off 10 overs.

Bowls
The Meadowbank club took two of the three trophies in local bowls on Saturday. The club took the national club sevens first division and second division while the Phoenix club took the OLT trophy. Meadowbank came through the first division games unbeaten, with five wins and a draw.

In the first division, Meadowbank's Graeme Sangster won both his singles games beating Awamoa's Mark Lister 29-13 and Bruce Kelly of Phoenix 25-19. Bob Campbell and Rowan Breen won both their pairs games, beating Ray Forbes of Phoenix 22-15 and Sonny Brown of Awamoa 12-7.

In the fours, Jock Sangster beat Phoenix's John Smith 16-7 and drew 13-all with Ken Piner of Awamoa.

• In the national interclub second division, Awamoa's Graeme Larcombe was unbeaten in the singles with wins over Gordon Brown (25-21), Len Milner (25-21) and Allan Holmes (25-22). In the fours, Maheno's Neil Robson was unbeaten with wins over Steven Newberry (16-15), Peter Cartwright (25-11) and Doug Harwood (15-9).

• In the OLT Trophy section, Phoenix's Ian Pitches was unbeaten in the fours, and in the singles, Tony Hill of Phoenix won all four of his games with wins over Peter Lee (21-13), Ian Williams (21-8), Bill Sheppard (21-17) and Keith Thomas (21-11).

• Phoenix's Gail Douglas won her fourth centre title when she defeated Meadowbank's Dorothy Breen in the women's two-life singles played at the Awamoa club over the weekend.

Douglas retained her two lives for the first five rounds with wins over Daphne Campbell (21-16), Kerry Kelly (21-20) and Dorothy Breen (21-16.) In the quarterfinals, Douglas took Campbell's last life with a 21-13 win.

Breen then took the first of Douglas' two lives with a 21-11 win and in the final raced out to a 14-6 lead after 14 ends. Douglas trailed 11-17 after 20 ends but she dominated the final six ends, winning five to beat Breen 21-18.

Tennis
In Southern Sub Association tennis, Weston's Albert Hailes downed Herbert's Robin Jamieson 9/2 in a top of the table clash as Weston beat Herbert 6-3. The Hampden top order Neville Caldwell, Nathan Caldwell and Kerry Packer saw the side through to a 6-3 win over Waimanui while Oamaru was too strong for Waikouaiti without conceding a game.

South Otago
- Norman Woods

Round five of the South Otago cricket competition was played on Saturday in blustery conditions.

Kaitangata scored 205 runs for eight wickets in its 40 overs. Roger Pennell top-scored with 44.

Best bowling for Lawrence came from Adam Wilson, Gerard Shea and Jim Hill, who all collected two wickets each.

Lawrence replied with 92 all out. Gerard Shea led the way with 24. Bowling for Kaitangata, Mark Phillips, Roger Pennell and Brady Carmichael took two wickets apiece, Kaitangata winning by 113 runs.

Blueys Tapanui batted first against Owaka and scored 178 all out, after making a poor start. Being four down for twelve, opening batsman, Chris Waide, who opened the innings batted right through the innings to be last out for 91. Julian Kelly 25, Luke Potts 35 were the best of the others. Jeremy Gray took four for 42, and Quentin Gare three for nine off eight overs. Owaka replied with 113 all out.

• Milton scored 82 for six wickets to beat Clinton, who were all out for 80.

Bowls
Round six of the men's interclub competition was played on Saturday, with leader Balclutha going down to Kaka Point by 10-2. The seasiders took the three opening games, then claimed a further two after the afternoon tea break. John Bisset and Neville Murdoch scored two wins each, while Ray Hopkins picked up the other win.

Noddy Thomson scored Clutha's only win beating Lindsay McCaughan by 20-12.

Milton Blue kept the hopes alive with a 8-4 win over Owaka. For Milton, Bill McDonald, Gerry Wyber (2) and Sandy McNoe scored wins. Best for Owaka came from Bryan Price and RAR Black with one win each.

Lawrence held out T and C to win by 7-5.

Finegand came back to form with a 8-4 win over Milton White.

Clutha Valley were too strong for Waihola winning by 9-3.

In a close encounter, Stirling held off Milton Gold to win by 7-5.
