The table, the sawdust and a No 11's angst

Who could forget the drama-filled test against the West Indies at Carisbrook in 1980?

West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding kicked down the stumps in frustration when his appeal to have John Parker caught behind was declined.

And, chasing just 104 for the win, New Zealand slumped to 100 for nine following some furious fast bowling from a fired-up Holding and his intimidating team-mates Joel Garner and Colin Croft.

As New Zealand No11 Stephen Boock nervously made his way out to the middle to join Gary Troup, he uttered the famous line: "I don't know whether to meditate, emigrate or defecate."

The pair scampered through for a leg bye to seal the famous win.

New Zealand wicketkeeper Warren Lees was in the thick of the action and the long-serving Otago captain said it was the most memorable of all the matches he had played in at the venue.

But some of the little things also stick out in his mind: the old wooden grandstand and the sawdust underneath that became part of the folklore; the characters who filled the ground; and even the old dark-blue rectangular table that has been in one of the changing rooms since at least the early 1970s.

"I just loved the place," Lees said.

"People always perform best when they are comfortable and I always found it a great place to play.

"I never scored a lot of runs there. I didn't get a hundred there. But we had some very good finishes and sometimes we manufactured wins out of nothing."

Lees played 108 first-class games for the province - 81 as captain - and 48 one-day games. He logged a lot of time at the grand old lady during his 16-year career and will miss the venue once it is finally retired.

"It became like a second home during the summer and the Otago team was like a family during that era.

"It is awful driving past now, knowing that it is either going to be knocked down or made into an old people's home. I'd like to think they are going to keep some kind of park there.

"Moving on is fine but tradition is still important. Progress is great but you have to hold on to some things from the past."
