Can May’s rivals knock his Socks off?

Driver Ricky May has fired a warning shot towards the rivals of A G’s White Socks and raised the possibility of the New Zealand mile record being broken at today’s Harness Jewels.

If the horse’s main rival, star pacer Eamon Maguire, is to chase the Canterbury pacer down in the 4yr-old geldings and entires race, he may need to break the 1.50 mile barrier.

The closest any pacer has got to doing that came when Border Patrol ran 1.50.2, at the ultra-fast Ashburton raceway, at the Jewels in 2013.

The thought of 1.50 being broken today at the much slower and tighter-turning Cambridge track has not entered the Harness Jewels conversation until now.

May has fired a big warning shot towards his rivals, suggesting they may have to do that to beat A G’s White Socks.

"He is good enough to go 1.50, I reckon; he could do that on a good track."

A G’s White Socks’ best chance of running a sizzling time and proving impossible for his rivals to catch will come if he can cross to the markers.

May admits he is not certain his horse can do that.

"He has got a good draw. There is a lot of speed there, though, so it is going to be pretty interesting, that first 100m.

"The one horse could probably lead if it wanted to. It has got plenty of speed."

Northview Hustler showed brilliant gate speed in his last start at Alexandra Park and could potentially park A G’s White Socks out.

A G’s White Socks is already locked in an intriguing tactical battle with reigning Otago horse of the year Eamon Maguire. That is set to get even more captivating should he not be able to find the front.

From barrier 2, A G’s White Socks looks set to play the leader and Eamon Maguire  the follower from barrier 2 on the second row.

In turn, he looks set to be tracked by the third favourite, Star Galleria, who starts from barrier 3 on the second row.

Should A G’s White Socks not be able to find the front, he  is faced with the epic task of sitting parked throughout the race to win or being shuffled back behind Eamon Maguire and Star Galleria in the running.

The thought of any horse giving that pair a head start on the home turn and being able to run them down seems unlikely, especially if Eamon Maguire brings his brilliant group 1 form from the New Zealand Messenger and Taylor Mile.

The ex-Westwood Beach pacer was breathtaking when he charged home to run second in A G’s White Socks’ Taylor Mile win, before winning the New Zealand Messenger championship.

His co-trainer and driver, Natalie Rasmussen, could not have been more complimentary when speaking about her pacer’s work leading into today’s race.

"Eamon Maguire is just flying," she said on her stable’s website.

"His work [on Thursday morning] was outstanding again and his draw is not too bad, really."
