Wingatui apprentice Zubair Bholah completed an epic comeback from near death to the racetrack to ride in jumpouts on his home track yesterday.

Bholah was left unconscious and without a heartbeat before paramedics revived him following a sickening fall in a race at Kumara in January.

The jockey fought for his life in intensive care with an extensive list of injuries that included three broken vertebrae in his neck, broken ribs, two smashed shoulders and large lacerations to his face.

Bholah took a massive step towards competing in official races by competing in yesterday's jumpouts.

''I have been waiting for it. I work hard every day at the gym and I was happy after nine months to get back to the jumpouts.

''It is like riding a bike - you never forget to ride a horse - I have been doing it all my life.''

A positive attitude and a strong work ethic helped Bholah put his horrific experience behind him.

His gym routine helped him build strength and recover from his injuries and with yesterday's rides behind him, he can now look to the future.

''It is time to look forward, now.

''I took my time and didn't rush. I worked hard to get back to race-day riding.

''I need to look to the future and keep moving.''

Bholah's positivity means he had no apprehension in stepping out on to the racetrack for the first time since his fall.

And he is not approaching his return to race riding with any nervousness, either.

He is waiting for clearance to have his first race-day ride since his fall.

He could ride at Gore on Sunday or have to wait for next week's Oamaru meeting.

The jockey will ride at next week's Rangiora trials to continue to hone his skills and regain his race fitness.

Bholah was aboard Macron in the first of his two rides at Wingatui yesterday. The Barbara Verlindin-trained galloper finished second to Luaganos Ace in a 1000m maiden heat.

Luaganos Ace has now won twice in two jumpouts this spring for trainer Steven Prince.

The Prince-trained Mint Julep is in the same position.

The 3yr-old Darci Brahma filly won a maiden 800m heat yesterday with Prince in the saddle.

Bholah rode Shantav to finish in behind the placegetters in the 1000m open heat.

Shantav is nominated to contest the Winton Cup at Gore on Sunday.

The jumpout was won nicely by Plutonium for trainer Jim Burns and rider Graeme Mee. The 6yr-old won by two lengths, ahead of stablemates Taieri Gem and Mossy Creek.

Trainers Brian and Shane Anderton produced an unnamed Ghibellines filly from Raise The Flag mare Preferred Flight to win yesterday's 1000m maiden heat.
