Loud name, loud colours and Irish luck

Pat Collins' first winner as a trainer at Oamaru yesterday was hard to miss for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, the name Rideitlikeustoleit stands out like a beacon, and then there are the silks - lime green with hot pink stars.

``I'm part-Irish - Patrick Michael John Collins - so I've got the lime green in there and Lacey wanted the pink stars.''

``Lacey'' is Lacey Stewart, the granddaughter of Leonard Stewart, who trains at Timaru, where Collins has been helping out in recent seasons.

``I've been pottering around with Len Stewart's horses for a while - me and Len and Lacey have been training a few horses for a while under Len's name.

``I just thought I'd do it myself and have a crack.

``I've had four or five to the races, so now it's good to get a win.''

Collins (58) rode ``60-odd winners'' as a jockey before he got ``heavy a bit quick'', but always remembered the fun involved in thoroughbred racing, even when he was away from the industry for 30 years.

``I went into business and played a bit of sport and then got back into it again and it's like riding a bike getting on a horse,'' he said.

``I was a bit stiff afterwards, but now I really enjoy it.''

Collins rides four horses in track work most mornings, and trains six or seven alongside the Stewarts, who prepare a similar number.

When he is not at the track, Collins owns the Timaru franchise for Dominator Doors.

``That pays for the horses; it's not a cheap sport''.
