The 3yr-old chased down leader Jules Manzoni well on Monday after a slow early tempo ruled out a chance at qualifying, but trainer Craig Buchan's decision to take the son of Flashing Red north to Oamaru yesterday paid dividends.
Flashing On finished 10 lengths off Baby Fern yesterday, but was comfortably inside the qualifying time of 2.37.8, pacing his 2000m journey in 2.32.9.
Baby Fern's 2.00 mile rate was the run of the day among the pacers, and backed up her strong fourth placing just 1 lengths behind the 4-win mare Platinum Princess at Forbury Park last month.
The trotter Valmagne took care of two pacing rivals in a c2+ 2000m mobile, getting home by a neck over Maybe Flyin, while Mokosun - who last raced in April - followed up last week's trial win with a half-head victory over Chiola Belle yesterday.
Mokosun provided Oamaru driver Matthew Williamson with one of six wins on yesterday's trials card, with the others coming through Eton Dorney, Jag's Son, Zhenya, Igottastar and Showtalk.
The Wayne Scott-trained Showtalk was just 2sec out from qualifying yesterday in a two-horse 2400m pace.
If the 7yr-old had qualified, he would have been the first product of Tyler B sire Sharvid Adios to qualify since Share The Joy qualified at Oamaru in December 2011.
Sharvid Adios was best represented in New Zealand by Tyler Foulden, the winner of 11 races for Steven Reid in the mid-to-late 1990s before being exported to Australia.
