Racing: Sunnivue Impulse qualifies as pacer

The  3yr-old Sunnivue Impulse qualified as a pacer at Forbury Park yesterday in a virtual solo run.

He ran the 2200m in 2.55.2, 3.2sec inside the required time.

He is a gelding by Peruvian Hanover from Cullens Star (by Christian Cullen), trained by Steve Ashton.

Trainer Alan Clark produced four 2yr-old trotters, with Heather Castleton displaying speed to win her heat after leaving stride early.

The Sundon-Anna Castleton filly was within 0.5sec of the qualifying time.

She is a half-sister to Castletonian, who has been sold by Clark to Australia.

Castletonian won the 2008 Sires' Stakes Championship for 2yr-old trotters at Addington.

Latheronwheel, a massive 2yr-old who finished second to Solar Victory, is a half-brother by Continentalman to The Fiery Ginga, winner of seven races for Clark as 2yr-old last season.

The Fiery Ginga has been back jogging for three weeks after a two-month spell.

He will have another spell and Clark is viewing a return to racing in mid-December.

• The Greymouth Trotting Club has all but ruled out continuing to hold racing at Victoria Park, the Greymouth Star reports.

President John Wood said the club was not in a financial position to carry on racing there.

The club faces a 324% increase in rates from the Mawhera Corporation, owner of the land, following an escalation in property values.

The club is also faced with the cost of upgrading facilities to health and safety standards.

The club recorded a loss of $43,000 for the year despite a profit of $12,850 on racing.

A subcommittee was formed at the annual meeting of the club to explore the options.

An alternative is to shift to Omoto and share the track there with the Greymouth Jockey Club.
