Racing: Wins follow move

Horseman Mark Jones continued his winning form since transferring to a new training complex last week when Lethal Rocket was successful in the Waikouaiti Cup yesterday.

Jones is now training out of Ovaport Lodge at Burnham, formerly Grange Farm occupied by thoroughbred trainer Neill Ridley.

It is close to his former stable.

There is an 1100m sand track on the property and a 1000m all-weather track is under construction.

Jones has 35 horses in work.

Jones won with Ardlussa Express at Addington on Friday night, five days after the shift.

Ardlussa Express was driven by stable junior driver Regan Todd.

Western Flare won for the stable at Ashburton on Saturday.

Lethal Rocket is part-owned by Garry Millar, of Levin, who was on hand yesterday.

He has been following the racing of Lethal Rocket in his mobile holiday home.

"I was starting to give up hope that he would win," Millar said.

Lethal Rocket had finished second at Motukarara and Oamaru in recent starts.

Millar races Lethal Rocket with John Burns, Brian Hastings, Syd Bradley and Christine Nash, all of Christchurch, and Warner Barber, of Geraldine Lethal Rocket became awkwardly placed after trailing the leader, Four Starzzz Flash.

He worked clear late and finished fast along the inner to win by a length and three-quarters.

• Three family generations are involved with Amati Ambassador, a winner yesterday.

The 3yr-old colt is owned by Nicole Elliott, of Invercargill, her brothers, Nigel Milne, of Melbourne, Grant Milne, of Dunedin, and Bryan Milne, a rugby player based at Beziers, France.

They race Amati Ambassador with with grandfather, Alex Milne sen, a retired horseman in Gore.

They bred the horse from Matai Moon Beam, winner of four races.

Amati Ambassador is trained by Alex Milne, a son of Alex Milne sen.

• Linda Connors, who bought a half share in Nicky Wright three weeks ago, had an immediate return when the mare won first-up at Waikouaiti yesterday.

Connors, a Greymouth hotelier, bought the share from Ashburton trainer John Hay, who bred Nicky Wright.

Connors was in the ownership of Franco New Deal, who won nine races races when trained by Hay.

Franco New Deal won the 2003 Invercargill Cup.

Her husband, Mark, is the ownership of Fernleigh Renegade, a winner in fast time at Addington nine days ago.

Nicky Wright is a 4yr-old mare by Sands A Flyin from Right Now Franco, the dam of Charlie Wright, winner of three races from the Hay stable.

Charlie Wright. who last raced in July, has not finished further back than fourth in nine starts.

•  Black Cracker, who cleared maiden ranks yesterday, is a 4yr-old by Badlands Hanover and the first foal of Cracker Kate, a sister to top mare Kate's Legacy and half-sister to Christian Cullen.

Cracker Kate took a record of 1.56.3 in a mile time trial.

Black Cracker, an embryo transplant, is raced by Rangiora breeder Wally Radford, his partner Diane Richardson, and Fiona Mules, of Wellington, and trained by Robbie Holmes.
